NUPENG CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMENS' DAY 2025

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2025

THEME: FOR ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS: RIGHTS, EQUALITY, EMPOWERMENT

From NUPENG Gender Desk – Comrade Grace Oghenedoro, Organising Secretary (Gender)

On behalf of the President and the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), we extend our heartfelt salute and celebrate the selfless sacrifices and invaluable contributions of all Nigerian women working across the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors of the Oil and Gas Industry.

International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8th, is a global movement dedicated to recognizing women’s achievements, advocating for gender equality, and accelerating progress toward an inclusive society.

This year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” underscores the urgent need for actions that unlock equal rights, power, and opportunities for all. It envisions a feminist future where no one is left behind. At the heart of this vision is the empowerment of the next generation—particularly young women and adolescent girls—as catalysts for sustainable and transformative change.

The year 2025 holds special significance as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark global commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s rights.

We proudly acknowledge the progressive leadership of NUPENG under Comrade Williams Akporeha, President, and Comrade Afolabi Olawale, General Secretary, who have fostered a conducive and gender-friendly working environment. Notably, over 25% of the National Executive Council (NEC) members are women, with a substantial representation of women across other key organs of the Union.

In November 2024, NUPENG successfully hosted its 6th Quadrennial Women National Delegates Conference at the National Secretariat (NUPENG Tower), Jibowu, Lagos. During this event, Comrade Adesuwa Oribhabor was re-elected as the National Women Chairperson. This achievement highlights NUPENG’s unwavering commitment to gender inclusivity, as the Union has successfully sustained its National Women Committee for over two decades.

At the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), we are deeply committed to these principles and is at the forefront of advancing gender inclusion within the energy sector. Through our Gender Desk, we continue to champion policies, training programs, and advocacy efforts that empower women and foster an inclusive workplace.

Our efforts focus on ensuring that women in the sector have equal access to opportunities, fair compensation, and a safe, supportive workplace. Over the years, we have introduced policies, and provided training that empowers women to take on leadership roles and excel in their careers.

Call to Action: Join the Movement

As we mark International Women’s Day 2025, NUPENG calls on government agencies, policymakers, industry leaders, workers and all employers to join us in accelerating action towards gender rights, equality and empowerment. The time for action is now. By working together, we can break barriers, create equitable workplaces, and build a more inclusive future for all women and girls.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, we reaffirm our dedication to advancing the rights, equality, and empowerment of all women and girls, ensuring a brighter and more equitable future for generations to come.

Together, let’s accelerate action towards gender equality and empower women to lead, thrive, and succeed.

Let’s make IWD 2025 a landmark moment in the fight for gender equity.

Our solidarity remains constant for the union makes us strong!!!

Long Live Great Nigerian Women!

Long Live NUPENG!

Long Live the Struggle for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment!
