INDUSTRIALL SUB-SAHARA AFRICA REGIONAL OFFICE CONVENES NIGERIA AFFILLIATES MEETING WITH A FOCUS ON "WORKERS’ ORGANIZING"; PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO DANGOTE REFINERY AND PETROCHEMICALS IN LAGOS

The IndustriALL Global Union Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Office from  9-11 July 2024, convened a two-day trade union meeting in Lagos, Nigeria. The primary focus of the gathering was on organizing workers, with special attention given to the Dangote Group, particularly its Refinery and Petrochemicals division. The event brought together senior officers, including Presidents and General Secretaries from various Nigerian affiliates, such as:

  1. Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG)

  2. Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN)

  3. National Union of Chemicals, Footwear, Rubber, Leather, and Non-Metallic Employees (NUCFRLAMPE)

  4. National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE)

  5. Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CANMPSSAN)

  6. National Union of Textile, Garments, and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN)

Mr. Kenny Mogane, the Regional Officer from IndustriALL Global Union Sub-Saharan Regional Office, moderated the meeting.

Participants engaged in discussions about effective strategies for union organizing in the rapidly evolving workplace landscape. The challenges and opportunities presented by the dynamic world of work were central to these deliberations.

COURTESY VISIT TO DANGOTE REFINERY AND PETROCHEMICALS

On the third day, the meeting concluded with a courtesy visit to the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Complex in Ibeju Lekki, Free Trade Zone, Lagos. The delegation received a warm welcome from Mr. Douglas Adiele (MD, Human Relations Manager), Mr. Olayinka O. Akande (MD, DIFZDC) and other senior management staff of the refinery and petrochemical complex.

After a guided tour of the facility the delegation had a robust discussion with Mr. Devakumar Edwin (Vice President, Oil and Gas) at Dangote Industries Limited. He took took the delegation through memory lane to intimate them about the story of the audacious dream and how they defied all odds through thick and thin including very personal sacrifices made by the President, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, to arrive at the present position of this gigantic facility which has become the pride of the nation and which by no means is the final destination of the President as he is determine to leave a legacy through these projects and more in the future which will serve to continue to boost the economy of our dear country for not only our present generation but for future ones yet unborn.

Mr. Devakumar Edwin also continued the history of Dangote Industries Limited by highlighting their commitment to adding value to available resources in Nigeria through their ventures in Oil and Gas. He thanked the delegation for the visit and solidarity.

Comrade Oluchi Amaogu (NUPENG) and Comrade Abang Eyam (PENGASSAN), responded on behalf of the delegation “ IndustriALL Global Union Nigerian Council congratulated Alhaji Dangote and his management team for successfully completing the largest single-train refinery in the world”. The delegates commended Alhaji Aliko Dangote for reshaping narratives and declared that IndustriALL Nigeria affiliates would now serve as ambassadors for Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals. They emphasized that any harm to Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals would be considered an injury to all.

Furthermore, the IndustriALL Nigerian Affilliates extended warm congratulations to Alhaji Aliko Dangote and his team for building a national asset with the potential to transform the Nigerian oil and gas sector. They also recognized the significant contribution of the Dangote Group in creating employment opportunities for both Nigerians and non-Nigerians.

The IndustriAll Global Union Nigeria affilliates sees Dangote Group as an important partner for unions in job creation in Nigeria and Sub Sahara Africa as well as one of the champions for industrialization of Africa and an enabler for the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to take effect.

Mr. Edwin also used the occasion to inform the leadership of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of NUPENG, Lagos Zone, who facilitated the courtesy visit, of the approval granted by Management for an office space and a logistic vehicle for them.

Finally, the Nigerian affiliates pledged unwavering support to counter any unholy efforts of International Oil Companies (IOCs) that might hinder the Dangote Refinery progress by denying access to crude oil supplies, thereby jeopardizing its optimal operations. Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s dedication to national development and job creation was highly appreciated during the visit.

The gathering marked a crucial step towards advancing workers’ rights and promoting sustainable growth in the Nigerian energy sector.
