COMRADE (HON.) PETER AKPATASON (mni)

NATIONAL PRESIDENT 2001-2009

Comrade (Hon.) Peter Ohiozojeh Akpatason is a veteran trade unionist, a distinguished former National President of NUPENG, and a prominent legislator in Nigeria’s National Assembly.

Born on November 28, 1964, in Uneme Nekwah, Akoko-Edo, Edo State, Comrade Akpatason pursued his education with a strong focus on labor and administrative studies. He obtained a National Certificate in Education from the College of Education, Warri, in 1987, followed by a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Delta State University, Abraka, in 1999.

Comrade Akpatason’s involvement with NUPENG began in 1990 when he joined Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) as an employee. By 1996, he had risen to the position of Branch Secretary, demonstrating remarkable leadership and dedication to workers’ rights. His commitment to the labor movement saw him ascend through the ranks, culminating in his election as National President of NUPENG in 2001. His tenure as President came at a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, during the administrations of President Olusegun Obasanjo (1999–2007) and President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (2007–2009).

At a time when labor unions played an increasingly influential role in national governance, Comrade Akpatason ensured that NUPENG remained a formidable force in advocating for oil and gas workers’ rights. He navigated the union through the challenges posed by industry privatization and economic reforms, working tirelessly to secure fair treatment and adequate compensation for workers. Under his leadership, NUPENG played a crucial role in addressing labor disputes between workers, the government, and multinational oil corporations, particularly concerning the equitable distribution of oil wealth and the welfare of communities affected by oil extraction.

Due to his exceptional leadership qualities and extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, Comrade Peter Akpatason was nominated and screened by the State House, Abuja, in 2005 to participate in the Senior Executive Course 28 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos South, Plateau State—the nation’s highest training institution for policymaker. He was awarded the prestigious title of Member of the National Institute (mni) in 2006. In addition, he acquired several professional certifications in labor and employment relations from other renowned institutions internationally. He was succeeded by Comrade Igwe Achese in 2009 having completed two terms in office as NUPENG President.

Beyond his contributions to the labor movement, Comrade Akpatason transitioned into national politics. In 2011, he contested and won election as member representing Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives. From 2019 to 2023, he served as the Deputy Majority Leader of the 9th Assembly, further solidifying his influence in national policymaking. In 2023, he was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on Telecommunications in the 10th Assembly.

Comrade Akpatason’s leadership is remembered for strengthening NUPENG’s influence during a period of economic transformation and political change. His efforts ensured that workers’ interests remained a priority amidst the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, and his continued service in the National Assembly reflects his unwavering commitment to public service and national development.
