NUPENG LEADERSHIP AND MEMBERS CELEBRATES’ 2024 WORKERS’ DAY IN GRAND STYLE

Workers Day 2024: Celebrating the Backbone of the Nation

The significance of the annual International Workers Day, also known as May Day. This day serves as a platform to honour the invaluable contributions of workers towards the development of the nation. It’s a time to reflect on the advancements made and challenges faced in the pursuit of enhancing workers’ conditions.
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), under the leadership of Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha (President) and Comrade Afolabi Olawale (General Secretary), joined forces with the leaders of the NLC, TUC, and various trade union leaders, along with the hardworking Nigerian workers, to mark this special day at Eagle Square, CBD, Abuja.

The event was graced by several dignitaries including His Excellency Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senator Goodswill Akpabio (President of the Senate), Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas (Speaker of the House of Representatives), Senator George Akume (Secretary to the Government of the Federation) Mr. Nyesom Wike (Minister of the FCT), Mrs. Nkiruka Onyejeocha (Minister of State for Labour and Employment), among many other top government officials.
The Presidents of the two labour centers, Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Osifo of NLC and TUC respectively, emphasized in their speeches the importance of prioritizing ‘people first’ in all government policies and everything else to fall into place.
 
Earlier President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his remarks conveyed through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, titled ‘President Tinubu Salutes Nigerian Workers on May Day’, pledged better living and working conditions for all Nigerians of working age, saying the “ custodians of the nation’s machinery deserve fair wage and enhanced welfare”, he further praised the efforts and sacrifices of the working class in nation-building.
 
The labour leadership in Lagos state, headed by Comrade Funmi Sessi (Chairman) and Comrade Tayo Aboyeji (Secretary) alongside other Trade Union leaders in the State welcomed His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State to Onikan Stadium, TBS, Lagos Island, the venue for the state’s May Day activities.
 
His Excellency Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, along with other top government officials of the State, paid tribute to the workers’ sacrifices on their special day.
 
This festive atmosphere was mirrored in all the state capitals across the federation.
